February 1, 2000 -Duract users file federal lawsuit
A federal product liability lawsuit charges that drug maker American Home Products of Madison, N.J., was negligent and should be held accountable for the injuries and deaths of patients who took their failed painkiller, Duract. The lawsuit was filed by the estate of three patients who died after taking Duract, and six people who said they suffered serious liver damage from the drug.
Duract was a prescription-only drug that went on the market in July 1997 and had become a popular alternative to narcotics for short-term relief of acute pain. AHP's Wyeth-Ayerst division recalled the drug in June 1998 after critics claimed there were safer drugs on the market. Opponents said the drug should never have been approved in the first place because even the clinical tests showed evidence of elevated liver enzymes that suggested liver problems were possible.
