The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Purdue Pharma have announced that the label of OxyContin (oxycodone) will now include a "black box" warning to prevent abuse, misuse and improper prescription and distribution of this dangerous drug.

Oxycodone is a strong pain medication similar to morphine and therefore could be very addictive. In addition, a high dose of OxyContin could be lethal.

The agency explained that its goal is to prevent abuse of OxyContin while keeping it easily accessible to patients experiencing severe pain. Dr. J. David Haddox, Purdue's senior medical officer said that "The answer to stopping drug abuse and the diversion of pain medications is to support law enforcement officials and enhance drug education and rehabilitation programs." Thus, the government officials maintain that OxyContin will continue to be available to qualified patients.
